The Honourable John Nicholas SC is an honorary member of Nigel Bowen Chambers who was admitted to the Bar in 1987 and appointed Senior Counsel in 2001.
In 2009 he was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia, holding that office for more than 15 years. At the Bar he had a broad practice in the field of commercial law including intellectual property law. As a Judge he presided in a wide range of cases both at trial and on appeal, including many significant intellectual property cases in the patent, trade mark and copyright fields.
His work on the Court also extended to cases involving consumer protection law and corporations law in enforcement proceedings brought by regulators. He was a National Coordinating Judge for the Intellectual Property National Practice Area until his retirement from the Court in April 2025.
He is now accepting work as a mediator, arbitrator and court-appointed referee and is also available to provide general advice, including advice on appeal prospects, related strategic advice, and non-binding “neutral evaluations” to assist with dispute resolution.
